Finals Day 2018/2019

SINGLES

Group A
With 2 games played it was Neil and Peter leading the way on 4 points and facing one another off in the final game with Neil holding 6 shot advantage. As it was that final game was not as close as expected, Neil took a comfortable win and topped the group.

Group B
With Ellen unfortunately unable to take part it was down to just 3 players in the group. The group decider was the final game, between Sam and Graham and as with Group A the match wasn’t really that close, Sam’s win meant that he would be appearing in all 3 finals.

Final
Neil Jolly
(Brockley) v Sam Runnacles (Barking)
The jack is pushed back on the first end and Sam takes one. Short jack on the second end with Sam holding one, Neil’s last knocks his own best out and he drops 2. 3-0 to Sam.

Struggling for weight Neil forces his way to one with his last wood. 3-1 after 3 ends. Now Neil has the upper hand and Sam isn’t quite there. Time to block. Neil levels the game at 3-3.

Again Sam is struggling but at 3 shots down he gets his last wood in for shot to regain the lead 4-3.

Two ends to go and suddenly Sam is right on the jack again and Neil can do nothing except keep him down to 2. 6-3 to Sam, last end.

Penultimate wood and Neil goes from 2 down to 2 up, Sam is short and narrow and Neil has a wood to take the game to an extra end but it just falls the wrong way, 6-5 to Sam.

You can find a full copy of the results here.

PAIRS

Group A
Although a couple of the games were close run, Gt Blakeham B came out on top of all 3 of their games to win the group ahead of their team mates Gt Blakenham A.

Group B
And it was exactly the same story for Group 2 with Barking A taking 3 close wins to finish ahead of their team mates Barking B.

Final
Barking A
(Tom & Sam Runnacles) v Gt Blakenham B (Steven Cain & David Ford)
Defending champions Tom & Sam were at their very best right from the off. Three on the first end was a sign of things to come, Sam was peppering the jack time and again as they added one each on the next 2 ends. The 4th saw Barking holding 3 when the skips came to bowl and it stayed that way, 8-0 after 4 ends.

Tom could suddenly do no wrong, down on the 5th a lazy draw bumped in for shot after which he was forcing Steven to play into the head, which didn’t work. 9-0 after 5 ends. Limiting Blakenham to no more than 2 shots would give Barking the title but they did better than that, taking 2 for a 11-0 win with an end to spare to take back to back Pairs titles.

FOURS

Group A
With two comfortable wins under their belt Barking went into their last game with a 2 point and 13 shot advantage over their nearest rivals. Even if they had lost they would probably still have qualified, but as it was they took another win, finishing 3 points ahead of Barrow.

Group B
Belstead/Brockley and Claydon went into their final games on 3 points each, having drawn with one another. After establishing a good lead in that final game Belstead/Brockley almost threw it away against Gt Blakenham but just hung on to win. Meanwhile Claydon suffered a loss against Hundon, leaving Belstead/Brockley group winners on 5 points.

Final
Belstead/Brockley
(Neil & Keith Jolly and Paul & Mike Daniels) v Barking (Tom, Sam, Rita & Pete Runnacles)
Barking were off to a great start, 3 on the first end, but that didn’t last long. On a tricky hand were width was crucial Belstead/Brockley took 4 to go into the lead. The followed that up with one on the third end which was matched by Barking on the next. 4-5 after 4 ends.

The fifth end was crucial, Barking held 3 with the skips left to bowl. But with his first wood Neil rescued a dire looking situation by both moving the jack free and holding one, then drawing a second with his last while Tom just fell short. 4-7 with 2 ends to go but it wasn’t over just yet. The penultimate end saw Belstead/Brockley in a tricky position and it was a question of damage limitation for them as they dropped just 2 and headed into the last end still one up.

After Barking began well the jack was moved out of the head and again that tricky hand came in to play. In the end, rather than risk helping the opposition Belstead/Brockley decided to block one hand, leaving the other open. It was a risky decision but it paid off as Tom’s final wood fell short and Belstead/Brockleycould walk the final wood up having secured an 8-6 victory.

A word of congratulations to Sam Runnacles who had an outstanding day, achieving the unique record of qualifying for each of the finals, winning two and only just missing out on a third, adding to the Triples title which he, Tom and Clint had taken earlier in the season.

Suffolk Triples 2018/2019

This year saw an up turn in entries with 42 teams, although a couple had to drop out at the last moment.

As usual the competition would be played through to the final. The top 2 from each group would go through to the Knockout Rounds.

Group 1
Knodishall A had qualified after their first 3 games, losing their last to Stanningfield, which saw them go through too. But losing their final game meant that Knodishall A won the group.

Group 2
There was a 3 way tussle for the 2 qualifying spots with Barking A, Withersfield B and Hundon A all finishing on 6 points. In the end Witherfield were the ones who had to miss out.

Group 3
Brockley/Belstead won their first 3 games, which was enough to see them through, but then lost to Barking/Claydon for whom that was their 3rd win and enough for qualification, they went on to win all 4 games.

Group 4
Gt Blakenham A made it comfortably through with 4 wins. Earl Soham would need to win their last game (with at least 8 shots) in order to qualify, however they lost which left Burstall in second place on 5 points.

Group 5
With Cockfield through on 3 wins it all came down to the final game with three teams in with a shout of making the runner-up spot. Best of those 3 (who all finished on 4 points) were Whatfield C.

Group 6
Hoggards Green A and Claydon A were both safely through before they played one another. Claydon finished top with just one dropped point.

Group 7
Bramford were through with 3 wins, as were Hoggards Green C who took first place in the group by one shot.

Group 8
Cockfield D were the only team in the group to get through their first 3 games without a loss. They went on to win all 4 with Gt Blakenham B winning 3 to finish second.

Knockout Rounds
First Round
Brockley/Belstead
started strong and ran out to an 11-2 win over Hundon A. Claydon A ran away to a 15-1 win over Burstall. Whatfield C were comfortably ahead 7-1 against Gt Blakenham A, but 9 shots over 2 ends saw the lead disappear and Blakenham won 10-8. It was just 1 shot an end between Cockfield B & Hoggards Green A, but Hoggards won 5 of the ends.

After a slow start Gt Blakenham B picked up 9 shots over 2 ends against Hoggards Green C, eventually winning 14-5. It was all square between Cockfield D & Bramford with 2 ends to play, but Cockfield managed to win them both, finishing 10-5 winners. Knodishall A were just ahead in a tight game against Barking A, but the final 2 ends went against them, Barking winning 6-4. Barking/Claydon had to fight hard against Stanningfield, grabbing 3 on the penultimate end, with no score on the last, winning 5-4.

Quarter Finals
There was never much in it between Brockley/Belstead and Gt Blakenham A, but Blakenham bowled well to pick up 2 on the last end for a 5-4 win. It was a to and fro game between Claydon A and Hoggards Green A, alternating winning ends, but Claydon won 4 against Hoaggards' 3 and won the game 9-6. Barking/Claydon picked up all 6 against Cockfield D on the first end, Cockfield made a game of it, but couldn't quite do enough as Barking/Claydon scrambled a 9-8 win. Gt Blakenham B and Barking A had to go all the way to an extra end with Blakenham finally getting the win, 5-4.

Semi-Finals
Barking/Claydon
took each of the first 4 ends against Gt Blakenham B, establishing a 5-0 lead. However Blakenham pulled back to level over the next 2 ends to give us a last end shootout which went to Barking/Claydon (just).

It was all square between Gt Blakenham A and Claydon A going into what would be the final end as the clock ran down, Blakenham had final wood with Claydon holding, but couldn't quite make it, Claydon won 5-4.

Final
Barking/Claydon
(Tom & Sam Runnacles and Clint Watling) v Claydon A (Matt Crane and Steve & Sue Isles)
End 1 - A rather fortunate final wood from Tom takes shot, bouncing around until it holds. 1-0 to Barking/Claydon.
End 2 - Sue's first wood drops in behind the jack and stays there. 1-1.
End 3 - With the jack driven back and holding one Tom tries to get rid of Claydon's best wood, instead all he does is to replace his holding shot. 2-1 to Barking/Claydon.
End 4 - Matt, perhaps lucky to only be 2 down, gets something out of nothing with his last wood, and snatches shot. 2-2.
End 5 - Matt again gets a bit of a result, running down the wrong line to get shot, but Tom plays a lovely draw with his last to move his best wood in. 3-2 to Barking/Claydon.
End 6 - Holding 2 and with a chance to block Matt chooses to cover the jack if it does get moved, leaving it open for Tom. He takes his chance, goes 2 up and hangs on to it. 5-2.
End 7 - Clint's opening woods pretty much put the game out of reach. Matt moves it to hold one and has an outside chance of a result with his last but can't get it. 5-3 to Barking/Claydon who win the title for the third year in a row.
