» Inter County League Play-Off 2011

On the evening of Saturday 12 November, part way through the National County Championships at Potters was held the Inter County League Play-Off.

This match was between the Eastern Counties League winners and the Northern Counties League winners for the 2010/2011 season.

The match this year was between Suffolk and Sunderland. Each team were represented by six rinks (fours), each playing one nine end game.

A close high quality match was expected and those watching could not have been disappointed with what they saw.

Suffolk started the match well and gained slender advantages in a couple of the games. However the Sunderland team kept themselves in the match and the halfway stages of the games there was very little separating the two teams.

In the first game to finish the Suffolk rink held on to take a low scoring game 6-4.

The second game to conclude saw a more convincing win for Suffolk by 10-4.

The next game to finish also went Suffolk's way, but only just by 9-8.

Suffolk only needed another point to win the play-off. That came with the final bowl of the next game to finish when a 9-9 draw was snatched from the jaws of defeat.

In the penultimate game Suffolk again avoided defeat by sneaking a single shot on the last end to secure another draw, a low scoring 5-5.

The final game saw the Suffolk rink holding a match winning position before the Sunderland skip bowled the wood of the night to save his team and steal a 7-6 win.

It had been a fantastic match in which both teams had played their part. Overall Suffolk had won 8-4 (45-29 on shots) and were the 2011 Inter County League winners.

The winning Suffolk team was: John Varden, Shirley Watkins, Ellen Grube, Tom Runnacles, Peter Runnacles, Don Allum, James Rous, Steven Cain, Sue Davey, Sally Goodrich, Jon Jordan, Neil Jolly, Sue Jones, Jim Goodrich, Mick Watkins, David Mittell, Sam Runnacles, Ralph Sadgrove, Paul Daniels, Andrew Cooper, Ryan Willoughby, Trevor Bean, Colin Fellingham, Sue Gilder.
